Discover the Future of Sustainable Microalgae Cultivation at the First SMACC+ Webinar

-The SMACC+ project launches its international webinar series with a session dedicated to sustainable microalgae cultivation, bringing together leading European experts to explore innovative production systems for high-value bioactive compounds.

The SMACC+ Interreg Atlantic Area project will launch its international webinar series “Exploring the Potential of Microalgae Biocompounds for Cosmeceuticals and Nutricosmetics” on 22 September 2026 (11:00–13:00 CEST) with its first online session, “Cultivation of Microalgae”.

Organised by Cosmetic Valley and the Universidade de Vigo (UVigo), the webinar marks the beginning of a four-part programme designed to showcase the latest scientific advances and industrial developments across the microalgae value chain. Participation is free and open to researchers, companies, students and all stakeholders interested in sustainable marine biotechnology.

Sustainable cultivation: the foundation of the microalgae value chain

As demand for natural and sustainable ingredients continues to grow, microalgae are emerging as one of the most promising biological resources for the development of innovative products in the cosmetics and nutraceutical sectors.

This first webinar will explore the cultivation stage of the value chain, presenting sustainable production systems, experimental cultivation technologies and industrial-scale processes that enable the production of high-value bioactive compounds while supporting the transition towards a circular and blue bioeconomy.

Three leading European experts

The session will feature presentations from internationally recognised specialists:

·        Tonia Principe (Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias – ITC, Spain)

  •  Sustainable Cultivation of Native Microalgae in the Canary Islands

·        Jean-Baptiste Berard (IFREMER, France)
Experimental Culture Systems for the Study of Microalgae

·        Sofia Vaz (A4F – Algae For Future, Portugal)
Industrial Production of Microalgae: From Process Development to High-Value Biocompounds for Cosmetics

Together, these presentations will offer participants a comprehensive overview of current cultivation strategies, bridging cutting-edge research with industrial applications.

A webinar series supporting innovation in the blue bioeconomy

The webinar is the first of four sessions that will run between September 2026 and December 2027, covering every stage of the microalgae value chain—from cultivation and green extraction technologies to the biological properties of bioactive compounds and the formulation of innovative cosmetic products.

The series forms one of SMACC+’s flagship knowledge-sharing initiatives, fostering collaboration between academia, industry and innovation stakeholders while promoting the sustainable exploitation of marine biological resources across the Atlantic Area.
