SMACC+ launches the webinar series " Exploring the potential of microalgae biocompounds for cosmeceuticals and nutricosmetics."

Cosmetic Valley and the Universidade de Vigo are launching a new international webinar series within the framework of the SMACC+ Interreg Atlantic Area project. Running from September 2026 to December 2027, the programme will bring together leading experts from academia, research centres and industry to explore the latest advances in microalgae-derived bioactive compounds for cosmetic and nutraceutical applications.

The SMACC+ Webinar Series " Exploring the potential of microalgae biocompounds for cosmeceuticals and nutricosmetics. " is a new international initiative organised by Cosmetic Valley and the Universidade de Vigo (UVigo) as part of the SMACC+ Interreg Atlantic Area project. The series aims to promote knowledge exchange and strengthen collaboration across the Atlantic Area by showcasing innovative research and industrial developments related to microalgae-based bioactive compounds.

Structured as a four-part programme, the webinar series covers the entire microalgae value chain, from sustainable cultivation and green extraction technologies to the biological properties of bioactive compounds and the formulation of innovative cosmetic products. Throughout the series, participants will have the opportunity to learn from internationally recognised experts representing universities, research institutes and innovative companies from across Europe.

A four-part programme covering the entire value chain

The webinar series is organised into four thematic blocks, each focusing on a different stage of the development and application of microalgae biocompounds:

  • Block 1 – Cultivation of Microalgae
    22 September 2026 | 11:00–13:00 CET
Sustainable cultivation methods, experimental culture systems and industrial production of high-value microalgae biocompounds for cosmetics.

  • Block 2 – Green Extraction of Bioactives
    15 December 2026 | 15:00–17:00 CET
Innovative extraction strategies, hydrothermal and ohmic heating processes, and natural deep eutectic solvents for microalgal biomass valorization.

  • Block 3 – Biological Properties of Microalgal Bioactives
    15 June 2027 | 11:00–13:00 CET
Health and cosmetic applications of microalgae bioactive compounds, including photodynamic, antibacterial and nutricosmetic potential.

  • Block 4 – Formulation of Novel Cosmetics
    15 December 2027 | 11:00–13:00 CET
Innovative cosmetic formulations, Pickering emulsions, microbiome-inspired products and successful examples of technology transfer towards commercial applications.

Together, these four webinars provide a comprehensive overview of the opportunities offered by microalgae biocompounds, highlighting scientific advances and their translation into sustainable products for the cosmetics and nutraceutical sectors.

Registration is now open for the first webinar

The first webinar of the series, "Cultivation of Microalgae", will take place on Tuesday 22 September 2026 (11:00–13:00 CET) and will focus on sustainable cultivation techniques and industrial production systems for high-value microalgae compounds.

The session will feature presentations by:

  • Tonia Principe (ITC – Canary Islands, Spain), who will present Sustainable Cultivation of Native Microalgae in the Canary Islands.

  • Jean Baptiste Berard (IFREMER, France), who will discuss Experimental Culture Systems for the Study of Microalgae.

  • Sofia Vaz (A4F – Algae for Future, Portugal), who will present Industrial Production of Microalgae: From Process Development to High-Value Biocompounds for Cosmetics.

The webinar is open to researchers, students, companies, innovation stakeholders and anyone interested in the future of sustainable marine biotechnology and its applications in the cosmetics and nutraceutical sectors.
