Sustainable Microalgae and Cyanobacteria-Based Bioactive Compounds


SMACC+ (Sustainable Microalgae and Cyanobacteria-Based Bioactive Compounds for Cosmeceuticals and Nutraceuticals) is a 30-month European cooperation project focused on the development of sustainable, high-value bioactive compounds derived from microalgae and cyanobacteria for cosmeceutical and nutraceutical applications. The project promotes eco-efficient biotechnological processes, circular economy approaches, and the substitution of synthetic additives with natural, safe, and effective alternatives.
Co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) under the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme, and coordinated by the Universidade de Vigo, SMACC+ has a total budget of EUR 2.8 million, with EUR 2.1 million of ERDF funding. The project brings together nine partners from the Atlantic Area, including universities, research organisations, and innovative companies, combining scientific excellence with industrial expertise to strengthen the European blue biotechnology sector.
