Key Project Actions

Operational pillars for implementation, transfer and impact

Research and Pilot Validation

SMACC+ develops and validates sustainable cultivation, extraction and recovery processes for bioactive compounds obtained from microalgae and cyanobacteria. Activities include pilot-scale production, green extraction technologies and advanced purification methods, ensuring that processes are technically robust, scalable and suitable for industrial implementation.

Bioactive Characterisation and Formulation

The project carries out chemical, structural and functional characterisation of bioactive extracts to assess their stability, safety and efficacy. These activities support their integration into cosmeceutical and nutraceutical formulations that meet industry and regulatory requirements.

Sustainability and Economic Assessment

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and techno-economic analyses are applied to evaluate the environmental performance, resource efficiency and economic feasibility of the developed solutions. This ensures alignment with circular economy principles and supports informed decision-making for industrial uptake.

Technology Transfer and SME Uptake

A central pillar of SMACC+ is knowledge and technology transfer to SMEs. The project delivers transfer-ready knowledge packages, practical guidelines, training materials and open-access resources, complemented by workshops, webinars and capacity-building activities. These actions are designed to accelerate adoption, scalability and market integration of sustainable bioactive solutions.

Transnational Cooperation

SMACC+ is implemented through close collaboration between research institutions, industry partners and innovation actors across Atlantic regions. This cross-border approach strengthens shared capabilities, enables jointly developed solutions and ensures that project outcomes are transferable and replicable beyond the partnership.

Expected Impact

By connecting science, technology transfer and market needs, SMACC+ enhances SME innovation capacity, supports the development of resilient value chains and promotes the efficient and sustainable use of marine bioresources. The project contributes to long-term competitiveness and sustainability of the Atlantic blue bioeconomy.
