-The SMACC+ project was featured at the II International Congress on Balneotherapy Management, highlighting the potential of microalgae and cyanobacteria for cosmeceutical and nutraceutical applications.
-Researchers from the University of Vigo, Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias and Instituto Politécnico de Bragança contributed to the presentation, reinforcing scientific cooperation across the Atlantic Area.
The European project SMACC+, co-funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area Programme, was presented at the II International Congress on Balneotherapy Management, bringing its research on sustainable microalgae-derived bioactive compounds to an international forum dedicated to balneotherapy and health-related innovation.
The contribution, entitled “Sustainable Bioactive Compounds Derived from Microalgae and Cyanobacteria for Cosmeceutical and Nutraceutical Applications (SMACC+)”, was authored by Víctor Ocampo, Herminia Domínguez, María Lourdes Mourelle, María Dolores Torres and Luana Granja (Universidade de Vigo), Abenchara Betancor(Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias) and Filomena Barreiro (Instituto Politécnico de Bragança).
The presentation introduced the project’s approach to developing sustainable, high-value bioactive compounds from microalgae and cyanobacteria, highlighting their potential applications in the cosmetics and nutraceutical sectors.
SMACC+’s participation provided an opportunity to connect marine biotechnology research with the fields of balneotherapy, wellness and sustainable cosmetics, while promoting knowledge exchange and scientific collaboration.
Through activities such as this, SMACC+ continues to strengthen the visibility of Atlantic research and promote the development of innovative, sustainable solutions based on marine biological resources.
