The initiative strengthens collaboration between research, industry and sustainable innovation
Vigo, Wednesday 6 May 2026
On May 6th, 2026, the Interreg Atlantic SMACC+ project was presented at Galicia Biodays 2026, one of the leading biotechnology and life sciences events in the Atlantic Area, held in Vigo, Spain. SMACC+ was showcased by Herminia Domínguez, Professor of Chemical Engineering at the Universidad de Vigo, the coordinating institution of the Interreg Atlantic project. The participation of SMACC+ in the event highlighted how the project contributes to sustainable innovation through the development of bioactive compounds derived from microalgae and cyanobacteria, unlocking new applications in biotechnology, cosmetics and nutraceuticals.
Galicia Biodays is an international event focused on biotechnology, blue economy and sustainability. It brings together researchers, companies, public institutions and industry leaders to foster cooperation, knowledge exchange and innovative solutions addressing current environmental and economic challenges.
SMACC+: advancing blue biotechnology and sustainable bioeconomy
SMACC+ is a project funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area programme that focuses on valorising microalgae and cyanobacteria biomass to obtain high added-value bioactive compounds. The initiative aims to develop innovative and sustainable processes contributing to a more resilient, circular and sustainable economy.
During Galicia Biodays 2026, SMACC+ highlighted the potential of these biological resources to generate innovative applications in strategic sectors such as:
Biotechnology
Cosmetics
Nutraceuticals
Blue bioeconomy
The event also provided an important opportunity to increase the international visibility of the project and create new collaboration opportunities between academic, technological and industrial stakeholders.
A platform for collaboration and knowledge exchange
Galicia Biodays 2026 brought together researchers, industry leaders and innovators committed to sustainable development and the blue economy. In this context, SMACC+ emphasized the importance of transnational cooperation and scientific exchange in accelerating sustainable innovation across the Atlantic Area.
The presentation delivered by the Universidad de Vigo demonstrated how applied research and European collaboration can support the development of sustainable solutions with economic and social impact.
Co-funded by the Interreg Atlantic Area programme of the European Union, SMACC+ has a total budget of 2.803.068,07€. The project consortium is made up of 9 core partners: the Universidad de Vigo (project coordinator), La Rochelle Université, University College Dublin, Instituto Tecnológico de Canarias, A4F-Algae for Future, Instituto Politécnico de Bragança, University of Galway, Alga Biologics and Finnova Foundation. The project also has several associated partners: AQUALGAE, Cantabria Labs, Cosmetic Valley, Xunta de Galicia and Consejo Insular de la Energía de Gran Canaria.
